Relaxing on golden sands whilst sipping on a Mojito as the glorious sun glistens on the crystal clear Mediterranean waters. Sounds perfect, right? Well that’s exactly what you can find in the picturesque region of Calviá, home to some of Britain’s most popular holiday destinations including Palma Nova, Santa Ponsa and Magaluf, each with their own charm. Majorca is renowned for having some of the best beaches in the world and the ones local to Calviá do not disappoint! Here at Gran Isla, we want you to make the most of your time exploring this beautiful island, therefore we are proposing 6 beaches in Calviá which you should discover during your next family holiday.
- Playa de Palma Nova
This beach can be found in the middle of three beaches that run along the Palma Nova promenade. The beach itself is enormous boasting 1 kilometre in length and 60 metres in depth. That’s a lot of sand. It’s also one of the most family friendly beaches on the island with fantastic facilities including sunbeds, parasols and water sports. Thanks to this, the beach, which can be found just a few metres away from our Tropico Playa hotel, has awarded a prestigious Blue-flag.

The Blue flag criteria, set up by the Foundation for Environmental Education based in France, consists of standards for water quality, safety, environmental education and information, the provision of services and general environmental management criteria.
- Playa de Palmira
Palmira beach can be found at the shores of the town of Paguera, to the West of Calviá. The beach itself features crystal clear waters that glisten in the sun, whilst also being rather shallow making it a sensible choice for families with small children. With great views all around including the town of Santa Ponsa, this playa also boasts a small pier which you can walk along and enjoy boat trips around the area.
- Playa de Illetes
The Blue-flag Playa de Illetes is a beautiful little cove with white sands which is located the closest of the six to the island’s capital of Palma. For this reason, in the height of the season you may have to stake your claim for sand space, but it is worth it. Surrounded by an array of restaurants and bars, it is also a fantastic spot for snorkelling.

- Portals Vells
As a counter to Illetes, Portals Vells can be found in a quieter location away from the beaten path and surrounded by a wealth of pine woodland which contrast with the beautiful blues of the sea. Whilst the beach still provides a restaurant, snack kiosk and toilet facilities. One of the main selling points of this small picturesque setting are the stunning caves called ‘La Mare de Déu’ which are a must to explore when visiting.
- Cala Fornells
Cala Fornells is a small cove located a short walk from Paguera town with stunning views of the bay. The drawbacks of this beach being there is not an abundance of sand cover on the beach and the sunlight does disappear behind the pine trees earlier than most would like, however the positives of the playa make it worth the visit. Fornells has one of the most stunning settings with the town of Santa Ponsa in the distance with unbelievably clear waters and an array of sea life to discover, making it an ideal snorkelling location.

- Santa Ponsa Beach
The large blue-flag beach in Santa Ponsa is one of the town’s main attractions. It is also a very family friendly beach with fantastic facilities which include parasols, sunbeds and lifeguards. You can also find chiringuitos (beach bars) here as well as a small pine forest at one end of the beach which is located at the foot of the Sierra de Tramuntana mountains. This beach is just a few minutes’ walk from our Jutlandia Family Resort, Plazamar Serenity Resort and Pirates Village Apartments.
As you can see there’s an abundance of fantastic playa’s in this area that are all perfect to explore during your next getaway to the Mediterranean shores. They’re also all super accessible with numerous bus routes passing through the region’s main towns including Palma Nova and Santa Ponsa.
