With activities for all members of the family, it’s the perfect way to explore deeper into the history of the island without having to stray too far away from your hotel near the beach.
The biggest historical and cultural event in the region of Calvia. In Spanish it’s called the ‘Fiestas del Rei En Jaume’ but what exactly does that mean? Well, back in the year 1229, King Jaume I landed on the shores of Santa Ponsa to reclaim the isle of Mallorca for the Christians when the land was under the control of the Moors. And in subsequent years, the day of the landings was heralded and celebrated in the Southwestern region with the festivities being brought back to life in 1994.
This year marks the 790th anniversary since the historical landings took place and the parties are set to be bigger than ever! From the 28th August ‘til the 8th September, you can find a full cultural programme taking place in the surroundings of our hotels in Santa Ponsa, as well as the region of Calvia as a whole.
So what can you expect to see at the ‘Fiestas del Rei En Jaume’?
Dancing giants… Bet you didn’t expect that answer. During the Christian Parades, groups of giants assemble to walk the streets of Santa Ponsa whilst performing a traditional dance. A number of traditional pieces of music have been created specifically for the giants in these parades.
One of the most important aspects of the Landing Parties is fire, as is the way with most festivals in Majorca in fact. The Night of Fire takes place in the streets of Santa Ponsa where demons cause havoc running through the streets and put on shows including fire and pyrotechnics. Something that certainly wouldn’t pass most health and safety regulations in the UK. Whilst there is a grand firework show on the final day of the festivities to symbol the end of these fantastic cultural events.
Possibly the coolest part of the 11-day long festival is a battle re-enactment from when the Christians battled the Moors. Participants are divided into the two groups and take to the coast to act out the scenes from that day in 1229. You can certainly expect a loud and lively affair that is not to be missed!
Before the final battle takes places there is a traditional dance that is performed by the cavaliers and knights, whilst they present their banners to the crowds.
Whilst there are action packed aspects of the Landing Parties, there are plenty of things going on in cultural, historical and art circles and there really is something for all of the family to enjoy.
