Majorcan gastronomy is varied and delicious. We have a rich history so our cuisine is influenced by the Romans and the Africans. Apart from having many dishes similar to the mainland, there are some differences since we usually include products of our own harvest.
Majorcan food is tasty and healthful.
At Gran Isla Hotels we want to introduce you to one of our star products: ensaimada.
What is an ensaimada? It is a traditional pastry, a sweet spirally cake sprinkled with powdered sugar. As far as we know, the ensaimada is cooked since the 17th century and we eat it for breakfast and as a dessert, with coffee or hot chocolate is perfect.
Although the ensaimada may be made without a dressing, it is very common to fill in it with other ingredients such as cream, chocolate, some fruits, etc. But it is frequent to find them without any filling but with a cover like apricot or nuts.
There are different shapes of this soft bun: from individual to familiar, and the prices vary accordingly.
The etymology of the word ensaimada comes from the Arab saïm, incorporated to the Catalan language later on. Saïm is pork lard, therefore the ensaimada is a cake with lard. The name in Catalan language is enssaïmada.
At Gran Isla Hotels you will find ensaimadas for breakfast in any of the buffet restaurants of our resorts, specially if you have booked an all-inclusive meal plan. We are sure both children and adults will love this delicious cake.
As our hotels are close to towns, you can also find ensaimadas in the restaurants and bars, and if you want to buy it as a kind of souvenir there are many cake shops which bake and prepare them to take away. In fact it is very common to see people with the boxes at the Airport, which is full of businesses that are supported by endless pillars of boxes.
Ensaimadas are the typical Majorcan pastry people visiting the island may try at least once in their lifetime.
