Background of Portals Vells
Portals Vells translate from Catalan into English as the Old Portals, named for one very particular reason. This area of Majorca is famed for its mysterious caves. This delightful coastal setting in the heart of nature is embellished by ‘La Cova de La Mare de Deu’, just a short walk from the beach which boast an interest past. Three giant entrances that adorn the rocky landscape which are the location of a wealth of inscriptions and sculptured stone walls. It is believed to have been created a number of centuries ago by local fisherman seeking a place to prayer before setting sail in hope of a safe return to shore. You cannot visit Portals Vells without taking some time to admire these intriguing, historical works of art.
How to get there
This natural oasis, a short distance away away from some of the most popular tourist destinations in Majorca, is not the easiest place to navigate to, but it is worth the effort.
The easiest way to reach Portals Vells is by car or taxi. The beach is a 15-minute drive from our Hotel Tropico in Palmanova, as well as our hotels and family resorts in Santa Ponsa.
The public transport to the area is very limited with only one bus that stops near to the area. The Line 107 bus, which passes through Palmanova, continues to its last stop in Sol de Mallorca, which is a mere 6 minute walk to the first of the three beaches, Playa del Rei.
Alternatively for the more adventurous families, you can take on a hike through the pine forests starting in Magaluf. The trail is approximately 6km in length and follows the gorgeous Majorcan coastline. A great way to explore the natural side of Majorca with a real jewel as the final destination.
